Star Wars Three Panel Watercolor on Canvas

Description

It's been a very long time since I've done any sort of physical art aside from cosplay.

This was a gift created for my boyfriend for his birthday. I gave it to him just before surprising him that we were going to see the new Star Wars movie with his friends. He wasn't expecting it at all because he had wanted to see it after the new year to avoid the crowds. There were many close calls where he started looking at tickets and all I could think in my head was, "Stop trying to sabotage your surprise!"

There were a number of resources I used to create this piece.

Inspiration: David Kraig's Star Wars Watercolor Paintings
Yoda: How to Draw Yoda Step by Step - Merrill Kazanjian
Boba Fett: Boba Fett Watercolour Painting - abstractmusiq

There are reasons why I chose these characters. I wanted to create a light, neutral, and dark character depicted in the movies. Yoda I had already drawn and painted out before I realized I should ask which characters Tom liked. I was super blunt about it and asked him what characters he liked without telling him what I was doing. R2D2 was his favorite and in another conversation I found out he preferred Boba Fett over Darth Vader. I had already sketched out Vader and had to do the best I can to erase the pencil markings in the canvas...it wasn't easy. I recommend planning out your drawings before penciling it in on the canvas. Fortunately it doesn't show at all in the final product.

It was my first time working with watercolor on canvas. I had no idea what I was doing. The watercolors didn't get absorbed very well so I had to wait between layers and try not to lift up the colors already painted on. I did find out that highlights are super easy to create because you COULD lift up the colors. But layering of darker colors over the lighter colors didn't work very well and it was easier to work between wet and dry which was a completely different concept than on normal watercolor paper. All I know is that if I ever get the time or purpose to make similar art, I definitely would do it.
